The Inspiration

Yarrow Thorne, an artist and innovator in Providence, Rhode Island, has long admired an 1899 photo of his great-grandfather sailing a distinctive 21 ft. shoal-draft, low-freeboard, gaff-rigged catboat, in which he circumnavigated Long Island. The catboat was designed and built by legendary builder Gilbert (Gil) Monroe Smith.
