Building the Stem and the Centerboard Trunk
The inner stem and outer stem cap are laminated from 1/8" Douglas Fir veneers and then cut to shape using the computer generated mylar loftings as a template.
WHIRLWIND II's centerboard trunk is 3/4" Maranti plywood. The inside is sheathed with 10 oz fiberglass cloth/epoxy and then painted with four coats of epoxy based Coppercoat bottom paint. The outside has a 1/2" Douglas Fir face frame that incorporates notches for the floor timbers. The plywood trunk sides will extend through the keel plank and deadwood and be capped by the lead ballast keel.
